Getting a Panamanian Background Check

This is my second time getting a background check in Panama (a background check by Panama for use in other countries), so I figured I would write it down as I had already forgotten the steps!

My residency in Costa Rica expired early this year, and when I went to renew it, I was told that one of the needed documents would be a background check as I had been out of the country for over a year (Covid!).

I went to the police department in David by El Terronal, and the first attempts did not go great. If I remember correctly, they told me I needed to return with a copy of my passport, and a letter requesting a background check. I returned the next day, but I hadn’t said it would be used outside the country, and so I had to write a new letter specifying that.

When I had that all set, I returned and inquired about the pickup process. I’m not sure if it’s always like this, or it’s due to Covid, but you can only pick up a background check in Panama City. Luckily, they had a notice pasted to their window explaining how you could send someone on your behalf to pick it up.

The requirement is that the person needs to have a copy of your passport, and a notarized letter giving them permission. So note #2, and off to the notary I went. It wasn’t a very long wait, and I just needed to affix my fingerprint and I had everything to courier.

My lawyer knew a guy who was willing to pick it up for me in Panama and take it to be apostilled. It was obviously not free – but it was way easier and cheaper than going to Panama City myself. So I opted to go that route, and hurray everything worked.
